3 startups changing the home design game

By Ellie Glover

There are very few industries that haven't been transformed by AI and design tech certainly isn’t one of them. In fact the market is expected to double in size by 2028. As an avid fan of the computer game The Sims in my teens, I spent more time building and remodeling homes than playing with the characters. These design AI startups are exciting for any casual interior design enthusiast.

Gone are the days of relying solely on Pinterest boards for inspiration; now there are a number of visual playgrounds which can help you accurately visualise styles or layouts within your existing space, and as with most AI tools these days, use verbal cues for exploring new designs.

Let's take a deeper look into some companies shaking things up:

1. Remodeled.ai

This particular app has taken social media by storm recently, by showcasing its incredible hyper-realistic renderings of your space, transformed with the help of user-inputted prompts on top of an uploaded image of your home.

It also suggests furniture placements and material finishes, along with realistic lighting effects, giving homeowners plenty of ideas for building their perfect space, with the added benefit of being a freemium model, for those just trying it out.

These remodeling tools have popped up like weeds in recent times, with a multitude of similar options such as RoomGPT, Reimagine Home AI and Interior AI.

2. Planner5D

Founded in Lithuania back in 2011, Planner5D can help designers and homeowners alike to create and convert 2D floor plans into 3D renderings that you can explore from every angle.

In true Sims style, you can also build and design multi-level floor plans with AI-suggested furniture placements and decor, or take part in their fun “Interior Design Battle” challenge, pitting budding designers against each other for the opportunity to win free renders and textures. What’s more, Planner5D recently launched a handy “Design School” for learning the basics of interior design, colour theory and ergonomic design- to perk up your real life Sims play.

Alexey Sheremetyev, Co-Founder and CPO, described their mission to make design software accessible to everyone, and has built the business into a team of 70 people with an impressive 64 million users.

In a similar vein to Planner5D, HomeByMe has many of the same features, but has collaborated with a number of retailers to upload real products and furniture into the platform!

SketchUp Free

3. SketchUp feat. Veras

Geared more towards architects, construction businesses and project managers, SketchUp also creates detailed renderings of home spaces, albeit slightly more focused on the external and structural elements of a building, or more specific furniture design. It has an easy-to-use collaboration feature, can be used with hand-drawing digital tools, and even has cost estimates for certain features.

Pairing SketchUp with the AI visualisation extension Veras, developed by EvolveLAB, you now have a generative AI powerhouse to input detailed prompts which can create ultra-realistic scenes, exteriors or furniture models.

As with most AI inputs, there is a need to be extremely detailed or prescriptive with the prompts in order to get the best results.

These innovations in the startup space are making the world a more stylish place. There’s nothing like home sweet home- ala AI. Did we miss any home design tools? Let us know!
